We installed two cast iron tube radiators in this basement and because of space limitations we had to plumb the supply and return connections on the same side. The radiators are set up as a downfeed water system, and have TRV inlet valves and can operate anytime the boiler is on as they are a ''wild zone''. I was initially concerned the water would just short circuit the inlet and outlet side of the radiators but my concern was unfounded as shown by the thermal camera shots. The water circulates very well across the whole radiator top and actually heats the radiator quite evenly.
